ARTIST STATEMENT

My primary intention is to transcend the limitations of sensory experience. I rely heavily on the medium of photography as it provides the opportunity to examine the relationship between sensory perceptions and the exterior world.

BIOGRAPHY

Sylvia Adamcik’s artistic vision imparts a sense of personal dislocation from extant societal values. With a strong focus on the theme of transcendentalism, both in terms of the sensory perception of reality and with regards to imploring the human condition to include the pursuit of enlightenment within its definition. Her ongoing thought experiments focus on Platonic maxims, the fragility of the human condition, asceticism, the derivative discourse of gender, biological determinism, rites and rituals, the postmodern world and cybernetic systems.

Sylvia is deeply intrigued with the new possibilities that have materialized as a result of the current state of technological change. The digital realm has broadened the scope of conceptual art, in addition to challenging the status quo of the institutional facets of the art world.

Sylvia completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts, History Specialist degree at University of Toronto. The art and culture of Medieval and Renaissance Europe were central to her research focus. She also holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Queen’s University. She completed studio-based training at the AGO Gallery School and Toronto School of Art. Most recently she has studied photography and design at George Brown College.
